Skilled Auslan Tutor
with more than 20 Years' Experience

Strathmore Wood is owned and operated by Neil Wood, encompassing former businesses Auslan Alliance and Green Door Auslan, established in 2016 and 2014 respectively. The restructure took place in early 2020. Based in Brisbane since 2010, Neil grew up in Melbourne and worked in Perth for 20 plus years. He is the eldest member of his all Deaf family – both his parents are Deaf, as are his two siblings.

Originally trained as a carpenter but due to his passion and interest in the Auslan and interpreting fields, he became involved in Auslan teaching, starting as a part-time teacher at Central TAFE in Western Australia.

He was soon offered a full time post teaching the National Curriculum Framework, Certificate II to Diploma levels. At the same institution, Neil also taught the Auslan components of the interpreters’ course. This culminated in his role of coordinator of the Auslan Department at Central TAFE WA for three and half years.

Relocating to Queensland, he was employed by Deaf Australia, the national advocacy body for Deaf consumers. He was responsible for coordinating the Auslan Short Courses and providing training and support to the Auslan teachers as part of Education Queensland’s ‘Transition to Auslan Project’. This project was implemented in primary and secondary schools throughout Queensland.

Neil joined Southbank TAFE in Brisbane as Senior Lecturer from 2014-2019. In conjunction,  he conducted several informal and formal workshops relating to Auslan and interpreting. Topics include Auslan linguistics, Auslan vocabulary, finger-spelling training, and story-telling. Neil was awarded the 2016 Educator of the Year by TAFE Queensland.

Neil holds a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40110) and Diploma of Auslan Teaching (WA).

Strathmore Wood Logo

The logo represents a sense of community individually as a leaf and the leaves and branches a community of many. The tree also symbolises growth through the use of Auslan.

The name Strathmore is a nod to Neil’s Scottish heritage and the logo also features on the Wood family shield. Director Neil is passionate about Auslan as a language trainer, mentor and interpreter provider and wants to share his passion with the community.
